A memorial ceremony was held Saturday at the DeKalb County Schools Coliseum to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the deadly tornado outbreak that struck DeKalb County on April 27, 2011. Due to weather conditions, the ceremony, originally scheduled to take place at the site of the Rainsville Tornado Memorial and Serenity Gardens was moved inside the coliseum. “We are here today for a celebration of life as well as a time to remember our friends and loved ones we lost on that awful day of April 27, 2011, not only DeKalb County but the state of Alabama as well,” said Stanley Sims, a member of the memorial committee.

The leaders of Bevill State Community College, based in Jasper, and Birmingham s Jefferson State Community College recently told Yellowhammer News that the plan will allow their schools to respond to the job training needs of Alabama industry more quickly. Not inconsequentially, one Alabama lawmaker believes the effort will save millions in taxpayer dollars. State Rep. Nathaniel Ledbetter from Rainsville has sponsored legislation that would allow school systems and community colleges to locally control construction projects.

A community memorial ceremony will be held at the DeKalb County Tornado Monument and Memorial and Serenity Gardens on April 24 beginning at 2 p.m. The special event is dedicated to the lives lost and those united in care and recovery, including the recognition of surviving family and friends and emergency responders. On April 27, 2011, 62 tornadoes ravaged Alabama in one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in the nation s history. In the outcome of those storms, there were 248 people killed in Alabama on that day. A monument that bears the names of 35 of those victims rests under the cantilever of the DeKalb County Schools Coliseum.
