Descendents of Alexander the Great refuse to take Covid vaccine! – The Island

BY S VENKAT NARAYAN Our Special Correspondent NEW DELHI, May 17: Over two thousand villagers who believe they are descendents of Alexander the Great and live in remote villages nestled in the Himalayas at an altitude of around 9,900 feet above the sea level are refusing to take the Covid-19 vaccine because it is against their beliefs. (The five-foot tall king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia, who set out to conquer the world after succeeding his assassinated father at the age of 20, had invaded India in 327 BC. In July 326 BC, he fought King Porus of the Paurava kingdom at Bhera on the banks of River Jhelum in present day Pakistan’s Sargodha district. However, he was forced to turn back when his exhausted and homesick soldiers refused to accompany him on his expedition across the River Ganga. Five drown in River Jhelum, dam - Newspaper

GUJAR KHAN: Five youngsters drowned while swimming in River Jhelum near Pind Dadan Khan and Oghahun dam near Guliyana village in Gujar Khan. According to details, four boys went to River Jhelum for swimming on Saturday. They were swimming near Victoria Bridge at River Jhelum near Hiranpur village when they lost balance. One of them, however, was rescued by the nearby people present at the spot. According to Rescue 1122, the youngsters were friends and had gone for picnic on third day of Eid. The deceased have been recognized as Haris Kamran,18, Mohammad Husnain,20, Mohammad Usman,18, while 15 years old Mohammad Jabbar was rescued.

KARACHI: The chairman of China-Pakistan Eco­nomic Corridor Authority (CPECA), Asim Saleem Bajwa on Wednesday said that 88 per cent of work on the Karot hydropower project had been completed. The first of its kind project under the CPEC, being built on River Jhelum, is expected to be completed in April 2022, a dawn.com report quoted him as saying. Sharing details of the Karot Hydropower Project through a tweet, Mr Bajwa said the investment in the project amounted to $1,780 million while 5,000 local people were directly employ­­ed for its construction. The 720MW Karot hydropower project was due to be completed in 2020. It has the capability to generate 3.249 billion units of clean electricity per year for the national grid.

Up to 88 percent of the work on the Karot Hydropower Project has been completed. The hydro power project - the first of its kind under the CPEC - is being built on the River Jhelum, according to a report published by China Economic Net on Thursday. The project is being developed on a Build-Own-Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis at an estimated cost of $1.98bn including a development cost of US$1.698bn and interest during construction of US$243m by Karot Power Company Private Ltd, comprising of M/s Three Gorges South Asia Investment Ltd (TGSAIL) and Associated Technologies (Pvt) Ltd of Pakistan.
