Work has finally started to protect Kendal from future flood catastrophe, five years after the county was ravaged by Storm Desmond. On Monday preparation work began at Dockray Hall on the first phase of the controversial £76million Flood Risk Management Scheme, which continues to divide opinion in the town. The first phase is expected to run into autumn 2023 and will see 6km of earth embankments and flood walls built with glass panels at key viewpoints along the River Kent, as well as the planting of over 3,000 trees, the creation of 55 hectares of improved wildlife habitat and 3km of riverside path improvements, as well as the installation of public art.
