15 UK market towns you ll want to discover | Day trips

Ludlow, Shropshire As one of the country’s celebrated foodie hubs, Ludlow will become a battle zone for outdoor table slots now that lockdown has relaxed. In a region famed for its wealth of local produce though, even low-key venues pack a flavour into every dish. Opt for takeaway salad boxes or cook-at-home three-course-meal kits from The Green Cafe, grab a box of nibbles go from Cicchetti Bar Ludlow or fine fare from Harp Lane Deli, where ingredients such as Amalfi lemons, n’duja and cognac are used as commonly as salt and butter by most of us. Along with the medieval streets of black- and-white buildings, this town is particularly ogle-able thanks to the sight of Ludlow Castle (adult £8, child £3.50) rising above the River Teme in the centre. It’s just reopened for tours.

Fiona Reynolds: In bright sunshine and strong wind, it s exhilarating to look down on the roofs of Great Malvern

Country Life Trending: April 15, 2021 The ridge of the Malvern Hills has been inspiring composers and artists for thousands of years: Credit: Getty Images Elgar’s music resonates all over the Malverns as Fiona Reynolds revels in a walk to the Worcestershire Beacon. With Elgar’s Serenade for Strings soaring through my headphones, my heart throbbing with emotion and effort, I climb the steep approach to the Worcestershire Beacon. It’s the highest point of the Malvern Hills and it’s blowing a gale. It’s been a gloomy, chilly morning, but suddenly there’s blue sky against the trig point and my black lab Ruskin (a puppy no longer) bounds to the top and poses.

Ward profiles 2021: Lawrence Hill - Our difference is our strength

By Martin Booth, Thursday Apr 15, 2021 Marvin Rees slid down the zip line at Felix Road Adventure Playground when Labour leader Keir Starmer paid a visit to Bristol to join the mayor and councillor candidates on the campaign trail. Despite being in Easton, the playground is in Lawrence Hill ward, which overwhelmingly voted in two Labour candidates into City Hall in 2016. The ward encompasses a hugely varied area: from the glass offices buildings of Temple Quay to the industry of St Philip’s Marsh, from the tower blocks of Barton Hill to the terraced streets off Stapleton Road. Authors who lived in and were inspired by Dorset

Mary Shelley  Richard Rothwell s portrait of Mary Shelley Mary Shelley published Frankenstein on January 1, 1818 following a summer spent with Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, John William Polidori and Mary’s stepsister Claire Clairmont near Geneva. Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, grew from a short story into a novel, and was initially published without an author’s name. Shelley s success however, was short-lived as tragedy struck her family. Following Percy Bysshe s death in 1822, Mary returned to England with their son Percy. In 1849, Sir Percy Florence Shelley bought Boscombe Cottage, which had been built in 1801, and he intended to turn it into a home for his mother, but Mary died from a brain tumour in 1851.
