The illnesses include severe colds, croup, which causes a severe cough, and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV.
The rise worries already overwhelmed doctors as the school year approaches. Not only do they expect more spread of the winter viruses; they also anticipate a rise in COVID-19 cases among younger students. Virtually all elementary school-age children that is, those younger than 12 are unvaccinated, and some school districts have said they will not require masks in classrooms, regardless of vaccination status.

Emergency authorization for Covid-19 vaccines in children under 12 could come in midwinter, a Food and Drug Administration official said , a move that could bring relief to many parents who have been unable to vaccinate their children. The agency hopes to then move quickly to full approval of the vaccine for this age group.
One sticking point for some families who remain hesitant, the official said, is that the vaccines currently in use are administered under emergency use authorization and have not been given full approval by the FDA.
