Synopsis: A poignant memoir of family, grief and resilience about a young man, his dynamic mother and the 80s movies they shared together. Michael Koresky s most formative memories were simple ones. A movie rental. A mug of tea. And a few shared hours with his mother. Years later and now a successful film critic, Koresky set out on a journey with his mother to discover more about their shared cinematic past. They rewatched ten films that she first introduced to him as a child, one from every year of the 80s, each featuring women leads.

Starchild: Frontliners top the list of Malaysian children s heroes

Loges Puvandaran, 12 An idol is like a hero; someone that you greatly admire. Your idol could be a celebrity you admire – singer Lisa from South Korean girl band Black Pink, or Malaysian squash champion Datuk Nicol David. It could even be a fictional character like superhero Spider-Man, Disney princess Mulan or someone you know like a family member, a friend or a teacher And for many of our readers, their heroes are the frontliners keeping us safe during the pandemic. An idol’s actions and life define who they are to you. You could learn from the good deeds your idols do and apply those lessons to your life. An idol is someone who inspires you to grow and improve, and who also learns from their own mistakes.

Jodie Tan Li Juen, 11 Brothers and sisters make us happy and sometimes, sad. Often, they amuse us with their jokes, and other times, they annoy us. Above all, we love our siblings. Life wouldn’t be complete without them. Recently, Starchild asked readers to send in letters on the topic, Siblings Day. Here’s what they had to say. “My younger sibling Ying Tong is a cheerful and loving girl. We are like two peas in a pod. Sometimes we quarrel but in the end, we always forgive each other. I love Ying Tong very much,” says Low Ying Xi, nine.

Back in the Day: Reveling in artistry of album covers

(Courtesy photo) Back in the Day: Reveling in the artistry of album covers One of the things I loved back in the day about entering an honest-to-goodness record store was seeing the artwork on display on the 12.375-inch square canvasses we called record albums. Look, of course the music on the vinyl disc inside was the primary thing, but often what sold or at least helped to sell it was the album cover.
