The Star Citizen single-player Squadron 42 not only officially missed its 2020 beta release but no new date has been announced in its place.

Squadron 42would be getting a beta release sometime in 2020. However, recent statements from Roberts Space Industries founder and
Star Citizen creator Chris Roberts revealed otherwise, which coincides with the RSI project roadmap deleting any mention of the release date on the site back in December 23rd, 2020.

Cloud Imperium Games Roberts Space Industries have apparently pushed
Squadron 42 back indefinitely after missing a key date. In a lengthy letter from the chairman of the company,
Chris Roberts, the company basically amended their roadmap calendar for all projects and removed the game from their plans for the time being. If you re not familiar with this one, the game is a single-player campaign set within the
Star Citizen universe. And much like the game it s based on, was teased years ago and has been in development forever. (Remember,
Squadron 42, which is a spin-off of
Star Citizen, was initially set to launch in 2014 before being pushed back multiple times over the years.
In the post, Roberts stated that âit is too early to discuss release or finish datesâ for
Squadron 42, adding that the game will only launch when it is complete. â
Squadron 42 will be done when it is done, and will not be released just to make a date, but instead only when all the technology and content is finished, the game is polished and it plays great,â he said.

He added that RSI will not compromise on the gameâs development, as releasing a broken or bug-filled version of the game would âbe a huge disservice to all the team members that have poured so much love and hard workâ into the game.

Facepalm: A lot has happened during Star Citizen’s seemingly never-ending development period: Russia annexed Crimea, a global pandemic began, and we’re about to see a third US president. The ambitious MMO space sim still seems far from complete, and the single-player element, Squadron 42, won’t be here anytime soon, after all mention of the beta was removed from its roadmap
Pre-production of Star Citizen began back in the simpler days of 2010, with the famous Kickstarter campaigns taking place two years later. In 2016, developer Roberts Space Industries (RSI) split Squadron 42 from the main Star Citizen product, selling it as a standalone game for $45 or $15 if you also bought the MMO.
