Al Sadd head coach Xavi Hernandez – a Spanish and Barcelona legend – has rebuffed news of his departure as ‘rumours’ from Qatar’s top football club. Xavi’s insistence that he will extend his stay at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium is a welcome news for die-hard fans of the club, which has won the prestigious Amir Cup a record 17 times.
After Al Sadd made early exit at the AFC Champions League recently, failing to qualify for the knockout stage of the premier Asian football tournament, reports started doing the rounds that the 41-year-old will not have his contract renewed with the Doha giants. The reports also linked the Spaniard’s return to Barcelona, where he has won many titles for the Catalans.

There may be no fans at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium tonight but there will be no dearth of excitement when reigning champions Al Sadd will take on Al Arabi in the first semi-final of the Amir Cup.
The match pitting the last edition’s finalists will kick off at 10pm tonight behind closed doors amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Al Sadd edged Al Arabi 2-1 in the 2020 Amir Cup final last December at the brand new Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium – a FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 venue.

Voting process begins for QFA Award

The Board of Trustees of the Qatar Football Association (QFA) Award yesterday announced the start of the final voting process for nominating the Best Awards for the 2020-2021 football season.
The Awards will be on offer for the best player of the QNB Stars League (QSL), best under-23 player and the best coach, selected via a voting process.
A total of 55 voting forms, in addition to indicative lists, have been sent to the parties participating in the vote, namely: coaches of QSL, coach of the senior national team, Under-23 national coach, heads of agencies in the clubs, media agencies, a representative of the QFA, a representative of the QSL, Chairman and members of the Board of Trustees of the QFA Award as well as a number of other bodies, including Qatar Olympic Committee, Qatar Players Association, Aspire and Old Players Committee.
