Golden Hawks Highlighted in Season s First Poll | KCII Radio

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys soccer team is gaining some recognition at the state level. In the preseason poll from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association, Mid-Prairie is ranked 10th in class 1A. The Golden Hawks won their season opener Tuesday over Mediapolis in Wellman 3-0 behind a pair of goals from Zeus Fugate. Mid-Prairie is joined by fellow River Valley Conference schools Iowa City Regina and West Liberty tied at No. 4. Burlington, Notre Dame is the top ranked team in class 1A. Other schools appearing in the poll are No. 2 Solon, No. 3 Greene County, No. 6 Waterloo Columbus, No. 7 Treynor, Denver and West Central Valley tied at No. 8, Albia No. 11, AHST and Mediapolis tied at No. 12, Dyersville Beckman and Pella Christian tied at No. 14 and Postville checking in at No. 16.

Lightning Strike Early; Beat Hawks

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls soccer team came up short in their season opener Tuesday at Iowa City Liberty High School, falling to the Lightning 6-1. Liberty took control of the game early with five first half goals, doing the majority of the damage in the first 10 minutes of the match. Down 5-0 at the break, the Golden Hawks played even with the Lightning in the second half. Mid-Prairie got on the board in the 60th minute on a PK from Kaitlin Martin. Emily Swartzentruber had 11 saves in goal for the Hawks. With the loss, Mid-Prairie is now 0-1 on the year as they travel to Monticello Friday.

Hawks Blank Bulldogs

The kickoff to the 2021 soccer season was a success for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys Tuesday as they shut out visiting Mediapolis 3-0. The Hawks got things started early with Ethan Trimpe finding Zeus Fugate in the 9th minute and Fugate beating the keeper to give Mid-Prairie the lead. The Golden Hawks would double the advantage in the 26th minute when Owen Trimpe found the back of the net on an assist from Gunnar Gingerich, leaving the Hawks with a 2-0 lead at intermission. Fugate added an unassisted goal in the 72nd minute for insurance and the Mid-Prairie defense continued to lock down the Bulldogs. Golden Hawk goalkeeper Keaton Graber turned in a clean sheet stopping four MEPO shots on goal. With the win, Mid-Prairie is now 1-0 on the season, Mediapolis falls to 2-2. The Golden Hawks will travel to Monticello to open River Valley Conference play on Friday.
