New pop-up Oak & Smoke aims to reinvent Louisiana barbecueÂ
Louisiana is famous for its food, but people are more likely to associate the state with its po-boys or gumbo than its barbecue.Â
Brandon Thomsen and Jeff Herman aim to change that with Oak & Smoke, Baton Rougeâs latest barbecue pop-up food joint.Â
âTexas has made barbecue an institution,â Thomsen says. âWe do so much great food in Louisiana, of all different kinds and all different backgrounds. I donât feel like barbecue is at the same level as it is in other areas of the country, and it should be.âÂ

NEW ORLEANS Bayou Boogaloo is in full effect and this year and it s the first event where masks are not required to attend.
At the Broadside Theatre in Mid City, there are people gathering listening to music.
Maria Cuniga-Lott felt great to leave the house.
She misses festivals like Bayou Boogaloo. Enjoying the weather, enjoying our local crafts, I m sure these artists haven t been working for a while, Cuniga-Lott said.

Historic A. Hays Town office building converting to space for retailers, salons

A couple of local investors are planning to convert a historic Mid City office building into a retail space for hair and nail salons, among other tenants. Located on Government Street near its intersection with South Acadian Thruway, the Class A office building was built in 1958 and designed by renowned architect A. Hays Town.

Small businesses in Santa Monica amongst hardest hit by Covid in the nation

As the dust begins to settle around the economic carnage of Covid-19, it appears that small businesses are amongst the City’s greatest casualties.
A study by accounting software service QuickBooks, identified Santa Monica as one of the US cities where small businesses revenues plummeted the most during the first year of the pandemic.
Their team calculated that the median small business in Santa Monica experienced a $26,000 revenue decrease from April 2020 through March 2021. This ranks Santa Monica as the 5th hardest hit city in the nation, in terms of small businesses, following Manhattan, Brooklyn, San Francisco and Honolulu.
