Following Joint Session Speech, Human Rights Campaign Praises President Biden’s Pro-LGBTQ Agenda and Support for the Equality Act Following President Joseph R. Biden’s inaugural address to a joint session of Congress, Alphonso David, President of the Human Rights Campaign, released the following statement: “The Biden Administration has made it clear through their actions that they are allies in the fight for equality and justice for LGBTQ people here in the United States and across the globe. And tonight, we were pleased to hear the president tell Congress directly that passing the Equality Act remains a top priority of his administration, and must be a top priority for the United States Senate. Equality and justice are not partisan goals they are the bedrock on which our country was founded.”

Hundreds of businesses sign on to support LGBTQ rights legislation

© Getty Images Hundreds of companies have signed on to a coalition in support of the Equality Act, a sweeping civil rights bill that increases protections for LGBTQ people in areas including education, housing and employment. The Human Rights Campaign announced in a statement that 416 companies, including dozens of Fortune 500 companies, have signed on to its Business Coalition for the Equality Act. According to the organization, the companies collectively employ more than 14.6 million people in the U.S. Of the large companies that joined the alliance are Apple, PepsiCo, General Motors, CVS, Facebook, Marriott, Capital One, Starbucks and Home Depot. The trial was originally scheduled to begin one year ago, in April 2020, but was then changed to a sanity hearing. Source: WAFB Judge Beau Higginbotham, who is presiding over the trial, deemed Gleason competent to stand trial on Aug. 6, 2020, after two doctors examined Gleason. Gleason is facing two counts of first-degree murder. He is accused of killing Bruce Cofield, 59, on Florida Boulevard on Sept. 12, 2017, and Donald Smart, 49, who was found dead near Louie’s Cafe on Alaska Street on Sept. 14, 2017.
