Crave Kabob slowly cooks giant cones of hand-stacked shawarma for falafels, kabobs in Chicago s West Loop, Skokie

CHICAGO (WLS) Shawarma stands selling falafel, kabobs and other Middle Eastern dishes are all over the region. But our Hungry Hound says a locally-owned concept - with locations in Skokie and the West Loop - differentiates itself, by hand-stacking their shawarma each day into giant cones that are cooked slowly. When you focus on Middle Eastern food, you better have plenty of parsley. The team at Crave Kabob, which has locations in both Skokie and West Loop, are busy every morning prepping and stacking. We make everything here. We make a little bit of everything. We make falafel, we make kabobs, shawarma, said Manager Husam Ahmad.

After more than two decades, Cambridge favorite The People s Republik has closed

Wicked Local The People s Republik is the latest Cambridge institution to permanently close its doors as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  After temporarily closing Dec. 4, owner Robert Blair confirmed to the Boston Globe he s shuttering the Soviet-themed bar for good after 23 years of business. A rite of passage for transient university students and a staple for longtime locals, People s Republik served as a simultaneous reminder of Cambridge s universality and singularity.  With an unmistakably bold red and yellow exterior, the bar s closure will leave a hole in the city s mosaic. Locally owned businesses are so central to our sense of self. Their closure, I think, has threatened our sense of cultural identity, said Theo Skeadas, executive director of Cambridge Local First. We really are afraid to see what the city will look like, what the streetscapes will look like, when the pandemic is over. A lot of our businesses have closed and are not coming back.

Iranian Foreign Agent Used by Obama s Media Echo Chamber Arrested

When the New York Times and the Washington Post wanted Iran explained to them, they turned to Kaveh Afrasiabi. So did at least one member of Congress who is only listed as “Congressman-1” in the FBI’s application for Afrasiabi’s arrest as a foreign agent of Iran. Afrasiabi had started out as Howard Zinn’s teaching assistant. The notorious Communist revisionist historian was the Iranian immigrant’s dissertation adviser. “My first exposure to Zinn was in his graduate class on Marxism and anarchism,” Afrasiabi wrote in a tribute at The Nation. Zinn had gushed, I admire Afrasiabi for his courage.
