The acting General Secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) Wayne Walrond is counting on divine intervention and the good sense of members to save the 77-year-old organisation from possible implosion.
Speaking on the heels of a rowdy and disruptive National Council meeting on Tuesday to which the police had to be summoned to restore order, Walrond labelled the behaviour of some members as a sad state of affairs that has left him a troubled man.
In recounting what happened during the meeting held at the union’s Dalkeith Road, St Michael headquarters, Walrond said that the council had invited past presidents and general secretaries to share their experiences on the best ways to move forward amidst the continuing divisiveness and rancour within the organisation.

President of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) Akanni McDowall has declared a meeting held Tuesday to discuss his potential ascension to the post of Secretary General “null and void”.
His comments came at the end of a dramatic day at the union’s Dalkeith, St Michael headquarters, that saw two meetings being held and police being called in to quell bitter exchanges between opposing members of the NUPW’s executive council.
