As promised, Allegheny Technologies Inc. has changed its contract offer to the United Steelworkers after the striking union did not accept the company’s proposal by a Monday deadline.
ATI had given the union until 5 p.m. Monday to accept the four-year offer made on April 20 or else it would replace it with one that the company said reflected the costs it is incurring as a result of the strike, which began March 30.
Union negotiators rejected the ultimatum on Thursday, calling the tactic bullying and accusing the company of “trying to force acceptance of its latest, take-it-or-leave-it, bad-faith offer.”

United Steelworkers negotiators on Thursday rejected Allegheny Technologies Inc.’s ultimatum to compel striking employees to accept the metals company’s contract proposal within the next four days or face a costlier alternative.
“They are again escalating their bully tactics and ignoring the employees, their most valuable asset,” the United Steelworkers union’s ATI negotiating committee told members in an alert issued shortly before 4 p.m. “We will not be divided, and ATI is only prolonging this dispute with its disrespectful and bad-faith ultimatums.”

Negotiators for Allegheny Technologies Inc. and the United Steelworkers union are returning to the bargaining table.
On Friday, the union said it had proposed returning to in-person negotiations with ATI to resolve the outstanding issues that led to the strike.
ATI and the union have agreed that their bargaining committees will meet in-person beginning at 8 a.m. Monday in Pittsburgh, according to ATI spokeswoman Natalie Gillespie.
“The company has committed to remaining at the table for so long as the discussions remain productive and are moving the parties closer to an agreement,” she said in a statement Monday morning.
In a release issued Friday, USW international Vice President David McCall, who chairs the union’s negotiations with ATI, said progress “has been hindered at every step by the company dragging its feet and violating labor law.”
