York great grandmother, Josie, marks 102nd birthday in style

JOSIE Kirk has just celebrated her 102nd birthday and enjoyed a celebration with fellow residents. Kind-hearted staff at the Connaught Court Care Home, in Fulford, were determined that Josie had a day to remember despite the pandemic, so they organised a small gathering and a Zoom video call with her family. Sharing her secret to a long life, Josie said: “To keep going at my age, keep sociable and friendly. Don’t waste your life and don’t worry about things you can’t change.” And asked what her advice would be to younger generations, Josie added: “Be content and cheerful. Keep your cup half full!”

A CARE home is appealing to County Gazette readers to help an incredible Taunton woman celebrate her 104th birthday next week. The Manor Care Home, in Bishop s Hull, is laying on a special party to help Dulcie Clatworthy enjoy her big day next Monday (March 8). And it is asking as many people as possible to send Dulcie a birthday card to bring her some cheer during these unprecedented times. Although she never complains, Dulcie has missed being able to hug her daughter, Barbara, during the current Covid restrictions. The two are able to meet up through a glass partition and speak through a microphone, as well as regularly chatting over the phone.

Reporter: );   ); Students from North West Regional College in Derry have been helping spread Christmas cheer to older generations by delivering Christmas boxes to the residents of Brooklands Care Home on Northland Road. The students, who are all Training for Success Trainees made a special visit to the outside of the Brooklands Centre to hand over the packages to Activities Co-Ordinator Fernando Ramos. Wearing Santa hats they waved in the window to the residents, delivering some extra festive spirit.

A resident of Brookside, Betty Snape with her Christmas card Louise Newton, manager of Brookside care home, Clayton Brook, said writing simple things like daily routines or what people ate for breakfast has done wonders for their mental health. She said: We have had loads of cards and had to stick them all over the doors. Once we take them down, we will be keeping them and putting them in an album for the residents to look at because they made them so happy. We had cards from adults and little children from everywhere. One even came from Dorset, wishing the residents a happy Christmas and lots of love.
