Did you know that Kansas City has gone 322 days with only 1.1 of snow? That s right! It has only snowed 0.9 on October 26, and 0.2 two days ago on December 29 for a grand total of 1.1 since it snowed 3 inches on February 12, 2020. It also snowed 8.5 last January as the Chiefs were going on their big Super Bowl run. Earlier this week we broke the ice and broke through with over an inch of liquid precipitation which came in various precipitation types from snow, to sleet, to freezing rain. This second storm will again bring various precipitation types into the Kansas City region, and this is another tricky forecast.

We made it through 2020. Well, almost as there are two days left in this very long year. There is a major winter storm targeting Kansas City on New Year s Day. It will be moving our way on New Year s Eve, and it may stay dry until very close to that first moment of 2021. This is a storm for us to take seriously, and be prepared for, as it is stronger and wetter than most of the storm systems in 2020. Cold air will be in place and we are forecasting some significant ice accumulations and possibly significant snow accumulations. Let s take a look.

A winter storm began just before 6 AM as reports of snow and a mixture were spreading into the KC metro area. It is starting as snow and a mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Here is the radar as of just before 6 AM:

The blue shade shows the snow, and the pink shows the mixture heading our way. It is starting as snow in the KC metro area and this will likely put a layer of snow below the mixture that begins falling. There will be slick spots on untreated and elevated surfaces, so bridges, overpasses, sidewalks, and driveways may become slick. If you are heading out early today, try to provide double the time it would usually take you to get to your destination.

Two winter storms will likely affect our region this week. The second one is looking rather significant, and the first one may be significant for a few hours. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY has been issued for Tuesday:
The entire KC metro area is in this Winter Weather Advisory for Tuesday. Warmer temperatures will be drawn in during the day and it will likely rise above freezing Tuesday afternoon or evening. Before that happens some icing of around 0.10 is possible which would cause slick conditions on untreated surfaces, and there is a chance of less than 1 of snow if it starts early enough. The amounts may be higher north of KC.

It is Christmas Eve, and we will be tracking Santa tonight on 41 Action News at 10 PM. We will get the kids ready to go to bed before Santa arrives. We will also be talking about the chance of a storm next week. There is nearly a 100% chance of a mixture of precipitation, but the trend already is for our region to get the least amount of precipitation.
I am nearly 100% confident we will finally add to this 0.06 total for the month on Tuesday. But, how much more? Here is the old data, and the new data. The first map is what the American Model showed last night, and what the second map is the updated version. Look at the trend:
