Kwara records over 200 cases of domestic violence in three months

Share National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has decried what it described as alarming cases of domestic violence against women and children in Kwara state. The commission, which said that violence against children and women are on the rise, added that it had recorded from January till date no fewer than 200 cases of battery and domestic violence in the state. Speaking on the sideline of a programme organized by the Centre for Community Empowerment and Poverty Eradication (CCEPE) in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria to commemorate this year International Women’s Day in Ilorin at the weekend, the state coordinator of NHRC, Jumoke Olaoye, said that the way out is continued sensitization among people.

Yahaya Bello commits to gender parity in governance

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi on Monday pledged his commitment to gender parity in governance by giving women greater opportunities to participate in politics and top leadership positions. Bello, who gave the assurance in an address to mark the International Women s Day in the state on Monday in Lokoja, said he had resolved to consolidate on his achievements by guaranteeing political empowerment for women. Represented by his deputy, Edward Onoja, the governor said there was need to sustain the effort at ensuring gender balance in governance, adding that gender equity would continue to receive topmost attention by his administration. He recalled that his administration facilitated the election of 21 Chairpersons and 21 Council Leaders for the 21 Local Government Councils in the state.
