Photo courtesy of Charlie Helms Charlie Helms received accolades from Crescent City Harbor commissioners Thursday and a promise to bid him farewell with a formal resolution next week as he moves on to another chapter in his life. Helms retired as the Crescent City harbormaster and CEO Friday after nearly seven years on the job. On Thursday commissioners appointed Deputy Harbormaster Tim Petrick, to become interim harbormaster and CEO. Before they sent him off, each commissioner thanked Helms for his service.

Gene Kelly hospitalized with stroke

UPI Archives (0) LOS ANGELES, Feb. 13 Actor and dancer Gene Kelly was in fair condition Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, recovering from a mild stoke, a hospital spokesman said. The 82-year-old movie legend, who suffered a larger stroke a year ago, was brought to the medical center from his home Feb. 7 after complaining he was not feeling well, hospital spokesman Ron Wise said. Kelly was diagnosed as having suffered a small stroke, he said. Wise said there were no additional problems caused by the most recent stroke. He is neurologically stable, Wise said. He is conversational and appears to be in good spirits and generally appears to be all right, Wise said. Doctors said Kelly will probably be hospitalized for another week, he said. Kelly starred in An American in Paris, one of only a handful of musicals ever to win an Academy Award for best picture of the year.
