With COVID-19 cases surging again and most in-person gatherings suspended, temples and synagogues in town have reimagined how to celebrate Hanukkah in both virtual and socially distant events this year.
The holiday, popularly known as a “festival of lights,” will begin Thursday evening and end the evening of Dec. 18. Traditionally, Hanukkah is observed by lighting the candles of a menorah, which are lit in the evenings preceding each of the eight days of the celebration.
Rabbi Michael Resnick said Temple Emanu-El will not have any in-person Hanukkah events this year because he feels holding them while coronavirus cases are surging would be “the height of irresponsibility.” Instead, the temple will hold a virtual Hanukkah menorah lighting and Havdalah at 6 p.m. Saturday.
