Her uncle, Robert Chavarria, is a native Chicagoan who lives north of Houston. I know what cold weather is, but the unfortunate part for here is that the infrastructure was not prepared for this, he said.
Even as power has come back for millions, Texans say their homes weren t built to handle below freezing temperatures. As a result of extreme cold, pipes burst inside numerous homes, leaving residents without access to clean drinking water.
Jill Osterman, a former Chicago-area radio host who now calls Houston home, doesn t have enough water pressure to do basic tasks.
“I haven’t showered in three days, so don’t mind the greasy hair,” Osterman quipped. “There’s not enough dry shampoo in the world here.”

Itasca officials seek to bring back the popular Fourth of July fireworks show, but COVID-19 still poses some challenges.
Officials met Tuesday night to discuss putting on the show with partner Hamilton Lakes Business Park after the pandemic forced the village to cancel it last year. The fireworks display is one of the largest in the suburbs, bringing an average of 25,000 viewers.
Although village board members want to host the event in some capacity, the question of how the event will take place was not immediately clear and likely won t be until late March.
Mayor Jeff Pruyn was clear on what will not be included at the event. No live music will be played and there are no food vendors planned for the event this year.
Other retail pharmacy chains in Illinois, including Mariano’s, Jewel-Osco and Walmart, are vaccinating people, and have been for weeks, but with doses obtained through health departments, not the federal program.

SPRINGFIELD State senators questioned public health officials regarding the state’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts in a Thursday hearing, one day after Gov. JB Pritzker announced that the state would expand vaccine eligibility under Phase 1B by Feb. 25.
Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike and Deputy Director Andrew Friend testified before the committee in a more than three-hour hearing, noting the state faces significant challenges in meeting vaccine demand with limited federal supply.
“Our greatest challenge is that we don’t have enough doses to satisfy all of the people that need it, want it, and that are eligible,” Ezike told the committee.
