The city of Santa Clarita’s annual Earth Arbor Day celebration is set to go virtual this year with the release of an entertaining and informative video program on Thursday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m.
The program will feature a comprehensive set of speakers including the Santa Clarita City Council; members from Urban Forestry; and Hike, Bike and Green Santa Clarita.
The program will detail the importance of local environmental awareness in addition to providing helpful tips for tree planting, pruning, recycling, pesticide pollution prevention and much more.
After the virtual premiere, residents are encouraged to visit the lower parking lot of The Centre at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway where City staff will hand out free bags of mulch on Saturday, April 24 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Dr. Sharon Jean-Phillipe is an assistant professor of Urban Forestry at the University of Tennessee in the department of Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries. She has earned her Bachelors of Science in biology, Masters of Science in Botany, and Doctor of Philosophy in Natural Resources. Her speech on April 7th concerned the details of her dissertation research which studied the effects of mercury contaminants on tree diversity and soil composition.
Dr. Jean-Phillipe began with a strong and detailed introduction in which she presented her lengthy list of credentials, establishing her credibility. The fact that her dissertation research was so detailed and specific made for an especially unique and interesting topic. The Arbor Day Foundation has named Springfield a 2020 Tree City USA in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management.
The city also received a Tree City, USA Growth Award for demonstrating environmental improvement and higher level of tree care.
Springfield met the program’s four requirements for designation: having a tree board or department; having a tree-care ordinance; having an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita; and scheduling an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
