Once at the forefront of Britain s defences, warding off everyone from the Romans to the Nazis many of Kent s fearsome forts now sit decaying, some swallowed by the land they once protected.
Lynn Cox explores their hidden history from Henry VIII to nuclear threats. and even a fort which kept sinking.

Fort Bridgewoods, Rochester
Built on land purchased by the War Office in about 1860 and forming part of a protective ring around the then Royal Dockyard at Chatham work on this Victorian fort in Maidstone Road began in 1879 but came to a stop five years later when the money dried up.
The site is zoned for light industrial development, located within the Big Bend precinct, where there is a large cluster of business parks and high-tech businesses.
A minimum bid for purchasing the site has been set at $63 million, while the minimum bid for a 60-year lease is $54.6 million.
BC Assessment has provided the property with an assessed value of $60.068 million.
Interested parties can submit a package for both options until the closing date of April 2, 2021 at 4 pm.

A bulletin by the municipal government has made specific note that it will “prioritize job-generating offers from proponents with experience in developing offices, and new media and film production studios in Metro Vancouver.”
Rochester drug dealer jailed

A drug dealer who failed to learn his lesson has been jailed.
Rochester man Torron Sapsed was caught dealing while under investigation, less than six weeks after he was arrested during a police raid on his home.

Officers found cannabis, cocaine and LSD alongside drug paraphernalia including scales and deal bags at the Mooring Road property.
Sapsed was arrested during the operation on October 29, and was released pending further enquiries.
However, less than two months later on December 4, officers on patrol spotted the 24-year-old acting suspiciously in the City Way area.
Fire that gutted Lake City strip mall was intentionally set, investigators say

It happened in Seattle s Lake City neighborhood.
SEATTLE - A fire that destroyed a Lake City strip mall and caused roughly $2.7 million in damage was intentionally set, investigators said.
According to Seattle Police, 911 callers reported a burglary in progress at a strip mall in the 3000 block of NE 127th Street just before 11 p.m. Monday. A witness said several people were breaking into a business there, though it s not clear which one.
The 911 caller was still on the phone with dispatch when he saw the suspects leave in a vehicle and noticed the building was on fire.
