Murfreesboro Planning Commission approves renaming Mercury Boulevard to honor Doctor Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard May 20, 2021 at 02:21 pm by WGNS MURFREESBORO, Tenn.  The Murfreesboro Planning Commission voted Wednesday (May 19) to rename Mercury Boulevard to Doctor Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard following a public hearing, May 5, 2021. The official renaming won’t take effect until impacted residents and commercial business are notified and new street signs are posted during the transition.  Proposed by City Councilman Kirt Wade in February during Black History Month, the City’s Planning Department studied the renaming and presented the proposal to a Council Workshop meeting March 10, 2021. Council referred the renaming to the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission is authorized by the City Subdivision Regulations to consider and approve street naming changes.
