Virtual Meeting Set to Discuss Lincoln Park Under-Bridge Space

The City of Duluth and Minnesota Department of Transportation are hosting a virtual public meeting to discuss the Highway 53 Under-Bridge Activation Report. The virtual public meeting, scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13, will provide attendees the ability to discuss the available spaces under the Hwy 53 bridge in Lincoln Park and their potential uses. Enter your number to get our free mobile app The project overview is described as such: The Highway 53 bridges, located in Duluth’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, were to be replaced as part of the Twin Ports Interchange project, but were deferred due to a funding shortfall. MnDOT anticipates the bridges will be replaced in approximately 2027 when funding for the project becomes available. It is important to understand the community’s vision for use of space beneath the new bridges now, in order to complete the bridge design in a manner that does not preclude a safe and engaging space use under the future bridges.

Snow Coming Again To The Northland On Tuesday Evening

Snow Coming Again To The Northland On Tuesday Evening Last week we had one heck of a blizzard with heavy snow and wind. It appears we have another storm this week entering the Northland, but it s not expected to be nearly as severe. The National Weather Service has been keeping an eye on this since last week, and as we are getting closer, they are feeling more confident on their forecast models. North Central Minnesota, including the Duluth/Superior area is expected to see 2-5 inches of snowfall. They call their confidence medium at this time, but they think the heaviest snow will stay out of the Northland.

What s next for Duluth s plastic bag fee

WDIO Created: December 25, 2020 08:00 PM With the Duluth City Council s Monday vote, the $.05 plastic bag fee will likely be delayed more than a year from when it was originally supposed to take effect.  We are quite honestly quite perplexed, Jamie Harvie, coordinator for Bag It Duluth, said.  He s frustrated by the continued delays and doesn t see the rationale.  People wanting a plastic bag in Duluth stores will soon be charged $.05. WDIO-TV file The Chamber wasn t opposed, citizens were ready, the stores were ready. And so it was just very confusing, he said.  Stores were supposed to be ready to charge customers $.05 per plastic bag in April 2020. That turned into July, then January. Now, it will be 90 days after Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz s or the City of Duluth s pandemic emergency order expires.

City of Hibbing approves $22M budget for 2021

HIBBING — The coronavirus has ripped through the pockets of Minnesota business owners and employees working in bars and restaurants. It has cut casino revenues and tourism sales in St. Louis County and left miners on the Iron Range to periodically rely on federal or state benefits to afford a year without promised work. The crisis has squeezed many municipalities in the region. But cities like Hibbing, which relied heavily on stable property taxes, taconite funding and implementing saving strategies, have managed to stay in a strong position — for now. The Hibbing City Council on Wednesday night adopted an estimated $22 million budget for 2021, up about 2 percent from 2020, according to City Clerk-Treasurer Mary Ann Kepler. Councilors approved general-fund expenditures at about $19.4 million, an increase of 2.7 percent percent from last year.
