The Town of Century is taking the next step toward applying for a $2.15 million coronavirus relief grant.
Following a public hearing, the town council voted Tuesday night to seek technical assistance from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) to review the town’s pre-application project for a Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Coronavirus Funds.
Century will apply for: $1 million for rehabilitation of the Carver Community Center $562,000 for rehabilitation of the town’s “Ag Building” community center on West Highway 4 and a parking lot $250,000 for rehabilitation of the Camp Fire USA buildings (owned by the town) $147,000 for rehabilitation of the Century Area Chamber of Commerce building (owned by the town)

The Town of Century has rescheduled a grant application public hearing after a simple oversight led to public notices that listed two different locations for the meeting.
The public hearing will allow the town to apply for coronavirus funding through a Small Cities Community Development Block Grant from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The grants will be awarded in amounts ranging from $200,000 to $5 million for neighborhood revitalization, commercial revitalization, economic development, public service, planning or housing.
A public notice distributed in the council’s agenda pack and a public notice posted on the front door of Century Town Hall both listed the location of Monday’s night’s public meeting as Century Town Hall on North Century Boulevard. Here is a list of what closed for Tuesday in the North Escambia area due to winter weather. Each is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday unless otherwise indicated.

Santa Rosa County SchoolS, including indoor and outdoor athletics.
Escambia County (AL) Schools, including all after school events.
University of West Florida, including online courses. All assignments, exams, virtual and in-person courses are suspended during this time. Reopening 5 a.m. Wednesday.
Pensacola State College until 1 p.m. Tuesday

The three utility projects are:
1. Highway 29 Construction Utilities
The Florida Department of Transportation completed design on a project to improve portions of Highway 29. The town will be required to adjust the height of existing valves and manholes, and make changes to natural gas lines, water lines and sewer lines in one part of the project. Construction is expected to begin in 2022.
2. Water Meter Replacement Project
The town wants to replace all existing commercial and residential water meters with electronic meters than can be read remotely. They are asking for the funding needed to replace the meters, along with new software and training for a complete radio system.
