EPS Receives Grant to Assist with Youth Sports and Activities
The Everett Public Schools’ sports program gained additional help with a grant of $4,000 from the Reebok Foundation and its nonprofit BOKS. Ward 5 School Committee Member Marcony Almeida-Barros helped facilitate the grant after meeting with the leadership of BOKS and connected them to the EPS administration to apply. The grant award provides assistance with physical activities at both the English and Everett High Schools.
The organization leads a free physical activity program designed to get kids active and establish a lifelong commitment to health and fitness. Many kids today need to be more active to avoid the continued prevalence of childhood obesity. Among the myriad issues facing our education system, obesity may not seem like a top issue, but its health implications are undoubtedly impacting students’ ability to learn.

Mayor Carlo DeMaria delivered his annual State of the City Address virtually on Thursday, Feb. 4. The speech was heavy on looking back at 2020, and also moving forward with initiatives for 2021 when, hopefully, the pandemic has subsided a bit.
It was, though, just one short year ago, and on Thursday, Feb. 4, Mayor DeMaria hearkened back to those fine days as he delivered an online State of the City that detailed what was done to help COVID-19 in 2020 and looking forward to what 2021 could bring.
Though long-awaited, the study to examine an extension of the Silver Line from Chelsea to Everett – and on into Charlestown, Somerville and Cambridge – has kicked off and will make final recommendations within 18 months.
“We’re excited to collaborate with MassDOT on this analysis of Silver Line service,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “Studying the extension of the Silver Line to Everett and beyond is a key objective of Focus40 and an important step in improving service to essential workers and transit-critical populations that live far from the Orange and Blue Lines and rely on bus service to get to work and other destinations.”
