Downtown Holland’s annual Girlfriends Weekend will return this year from March 5-7 but with changes in place to ensure public safety.
During Girlfriends Weekend, women are invited to spend three full days shopping, dining, wining and indulging in downtown Holland with their best friends. Unlike previous years, there are no large group events or a group Sunday brunch planned as part of this year’s Girlfriends Weekend to help protect the health and safety of attendees.
Participating shops and restaurants will be operating under current occupancy restrictions as mandated by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and attendees will be required to wear masks in all stores and restaurants and to practice safe social distancing. Attendees must also cancel their registration for a full refund if they are feeling unwell, have been exposed to COVID-19 in the last 14 days or currently are awaiting COVID-19 test resul

HOLLAND, Mich. â Downtown Holland plans to thank the public for their support with the return of âThe Big Giveâ on Saturday, Feb. 6.
They say nearly three dozen businesses will donate 10% of their sales to local nonprofits throughout the day, adding that each business will choose a nonprofit to support during the event.
âWe fully believe in giving back, as well as supporting the businesses that make our community unique and wonderful,â says Financial Planner for Lorence & Vander Zwart Financial Planning Nate Baumann.
âThis community has continually supported our business since 1960 and we want to do the same, especially considering the difficult year many have experienced due to pandemic related shutdowns,â Baumann adds.

HOLLAND, Mich. â Fris Supply Shopâs history is probably the key to seeing why the store in downtown Holland has survived and thrived through five generations of family ownership.
Today, casual walk-in shoppers on 8th Street in downtown Holland will find a store that can supply any serious artist or any parent looking for craft ideas for their kids.
But when the store first opened decades ago, parents bought textbooks for school children. I have people come in saying they remember buying schoolbooks here as a kid,â notes owner Andrew Fris. âThereâs a lot of memories and history here.â

HOLLAND, Mich. â âI m barely hanging on here,â says Terry McMurry, owner of the Windmill Restaurant in downtown Holland. âI m not even really hanging on . we re losing money being open.â
Thatâs what the pandemic has done to an eatery that has been in business since the 1940s. McMurry has owned the place since 1983, serving decades of hash brown omelets and fresh-baked cinnamon rolls.
But he knows how much the Windmill Restaurant means to people: âThis is a college town, so we get people that come back every year, saying, âOh, you know, I have to visit the Windmill when I m in town, because they were here in college.â A lot of college students come in here for their breakfast because we ve got dormitory style housing right close, and now we ve got a lot of apartment dwellers here, too.â
