The Springfield Area Arts Council has announced the recipients of its 2021 Community Arts Access grants in Sangamon and Menard counties.
Sheila Walk, interim executive director of the council, said in a release that the grants are given in conjunction with the Illinois Arts Council Agency and the city of Springfield. The grants provide the opportunity for local arts agencies such as the Springfield Area Arts Council to distribute state funds in their own service areas according to local needs. The program is designed to give the community more access to the arts, especially among under-served populations.
“Giving away money to groups that share our mission to enrich the community through the arts is one of the best parts of my job,” Walk said. “Through the applications and reports, the Arts Council knows that the money is well-used.”
Politicians say stuff. We must fight disinvestment in struggling communities. By using public money to leverage private dollars, we can make Skittles fall from the sky. Then there is White Oaks Mall, downtown Springfield and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Instead of Skittles, we face an Orange Julius rain, which is as yucky as it sounds. Politicians had eight years to get their snuff together – that s how long ago the feds greenlighted a rail corridor expansion project that dooms the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency complex on North Grand Avenue. Given eight years to get this right, why is government sending as many as 700 jobs to White Oaks Mall, where the state last summer paid $3.5 million for the former Sears store? It s the largest shift of jobs within municipal borders that anyone can remember.
