Town Talk | Fun and funky food finds at Lawrence-area restaurants in 2020 | News, Sports, Jobs - Lawrence Journal-World: news, information, headlines and events in Lawrence, Kansas

The idea of a food find in 2020 was a bit unusual. There were some days early in the pandemic that you were happy to find a crate of ramen and a bottle of ketchup on the grocery shelves. (With candlelight and a mask placed over your eyes, you would swear you were at the finest Italian restaurant this side of your laundry room.)

Bookselling Spotlight: The Raven Book Store

By Claire Kirch | Jan 08, 2021 In my heart, it seemed like such a good fit,” recalled Danny Caine, a former high school teacher and published poet, about his decision to buy the Raven Book Store in Lawrence, Kans., in 2017, a few months after completing his MFA in poetry at the University of Kansas. “Of course, I didn’t want to make a bad business decision. It wasn’t just that I wanted to avoid financial ruin for myself. It was also important to me to be a good steward for the store, which has been here for so long and has a hugely passionate and loyal following. I knew if I did something bad to the Raven, I’d be run out of town.”

Lawrence Restaurant Week will span 2 weeks; participants encouraged to do delivery, to-go orders | News, Sports, Jobs - Lawrence Journal-World: news, information, headlines and events in Lawrence, Kansas

Staff Report Downtown Lawrence is pictured in this aerial photo from December 2017. Supporting local businesses during Lawrence Restaurant Week will be especially important this year, according to a board member of Downtown Lawrence Inc. and the Lawrence Restaurant Association. Mike Logan, a local business owner and board member of the two organizations, said that this year they were issuing a “call to action” to participate in Lawrence Restaurant Week in whatever way participants feel safest, whether that be delivery, curbside pick-up or indoor distanced dining. “Every meal purchased helps our restaurants to survive and, hopefully, to thrive,” Logan said. “If we want to continue to enjoy these special places in the future, we have to support them in the present.”
