Downtown Bedford Inc. was awarded $50,000 in state funding this week to help with financial challenges resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.
The funding was through the state Department of Community and Economic Developmentâs Supporting Elm and Main (SEAM) program, which was created to provide financial assistance to community revitalization organizations dedicated to community and economic development in older and historic downtowns.
âI was relieved,â Stacey Gould, manager of DBI, said about her reaction to the news. âAnd excited. This takes away a lot of the extra pressure of not knowing what is coming next.â
About $2 million was awarded to 43 recipients across the state through the program.
Bedford County Chocolate Walk
Downtown Bedford Inc.’s 4th annual Chocolate Walk event will kickoff on Saturday.
The event is designed to get residents to support local small businesses in the community and will be held every Saturday for the next four weeks, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Participating businesses will offer chocolate themed giveaways and experiences, and whoever finds a golden ticket will receive a half-pound of free chocolate, from Bedford Candies, every month for the remainder of the year.
Tickets are already sold out for Saturday but are still available for the remaining three weekends.
Tickets cost $20 and 100 tickets are available per weekend.
Downtown Bedford Inc. likely wonât receive its previously awarded $350,000 anchor grant to renovate the former Ford garage on Pitt Street if the Dalesmen Distillery and Brewery moves out of the borough.
Stacey Gould, main street manager for DBI, told borough council during its meeting Tuesday the funding through the state Department of Community and Economic Development is dependent on the Dalesmen moving forward with work relating to the distillery in the about century-old building at the corner of Pitt and Richard streets.
âItâs tied to the building,â she said about the funding. âIf they can come up with an idea for a project that uses the facility, we could still push forward â depending on how itâs used.â
