The State College Borough Council met virtually Monday night to unanimously approve the construction of a seasonal walkway that would promote outdoor dining at Bill Pickle’s Taproom during warm-weather months while also improving pedestrian access along South Allen Street.
The “pedlet” will be constructed and in place from spring to fall months where two parking spots in front of the restaurant at 106 S. Allen Street currently sit. It will essentially create a sidewalk that directs foot traffic around Pickle’s new outdoor dining area.
The pedlet will be constructed by Hotel State College & Co., which owns the establishment. The company will be responsible for constructing the pedlet no earlier than April 1 and removing it by October 31.

State College police have released photos of three persons of interest in the defacing of the Martin Luther King Jr. mural in downtown State College.
An insignia and the words “PATRIOTFRONT.US” were stenciled onto the mural in a red substance. It was reported Friday afternoon, and happened in the overnight hours that day.
In a statement released Monday, The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau, Chamber of Business & Industry of Centre County, Downtown State College Improvement District, State College Borough and Pennsylvania State University denounced the vandalism “during a time of ongoing discord and violence in our country.”
Hotel State College & Co. is seeking approval from State College Borough for a seasonal walkway that would support outdoor dining at Bill Pickle’s Taproom during warm weather months while also improving pedestrian access along South Allen Street.
The “pedlet,” would be in place from spring to fall within the two parking spaces directly in front of the 106 S. Allen St. tavern, connecting to the sidewalk and going around the Pickle’s seasonal outdoor deck.
In 2017, borough council approved a three-year agreement for Pickle’s to have an outdoor dining area extending into the sidewalk from April through the end of October. The deck allowed for a 5-foot clearance at the narrowest point on the sidewalk.
Downtown State College Improvement District Executive Director Rob Schmidt is leaving the organization to pursue teaching and consulting interests, the DID board of directors announced on Thursday.
Marketing and communications director Lee Anne Jeffries, who joined the DID with Schmidt in 2018, has been named the new executive director.
“It’s time for me to take a step back and refocus my energy in different ways.” said Schmidt, who has been an adjunct faculty member at Penn State for more than 20 years.
In a statement, the board expressed gratitude to Schmidt for his three years of service, commending his leadership in strengthening partnerships. Schmidt was instrumental in forming a national town and gown group focused on challenges facing downtowns in college communities.
