Savannah menorah lighting celebrates start of Hanukkah
Fifth-graders Shannon Celiz and and Noah Feinberg read their winning essays but not before Rabbi Zalman Refson started the menorah lighting ceremony to celebrate the start of Hanukkah on Thursday evening.
It was a small group of people for the virtual ceremony on Ellis Square and televised for the public. Potato latkes were handed out to those who were there.
“These are foods eaten specifically on the holiday, celebrating the miracle of oil that took place in the 2nd B.C.,” Refson told the Savannah Morning News in an earlier article. At that time, there was only a small jar of oil, enough to light the menorah for a day. The miracle is that the oil burned another seven days.
