(WALB) - Dougherty County Commissioners just passed an ordinance to make the county a “broadband ready community.” Widespread access to high-speed internet impacts the whole county and it increases access to healthcare and education. Some people without high-speed internet faced issues when the pandemic hit. Phoebe Putney Health System had to ramp up its use of telehealth at the beginning of the pandemic. Dougherty County School System faced connection issues early on when in-person learning switched to virtual. County Administrator Michael McCoy told WALB News 10 that high-speed internet access is growing in importance.

21-Year-Old Builds Charter School for Young, Black Boys in Georgia

WALB News 10 in Georgia reported that he is opening up a new school in Albany. Randall aspires to transform the former Isabella School into the New Life Preparatory School. In the WALB interview, Randall said that he hopes the school will provide Albany boys more opportunities for success. He has been wanting to open a school since beginning The “X” for Boys program when he was just 19-years-old. According to the “X” Boys community website, the current program offerings include teaching simple automotive repair, home improvement workshops, and reading literacy.

(WALB) - Dougherty County School System (DCSS) Superintendent Kenneth Dyer has signaled his intention to hold in-person graduation ceremonies for each of the district’s three high schools in May, according to a release from the school system. The district canceled in-person graduation last Spring in favor of virtual graduation ceremonies because of Albany’s spike in COVID-19 cases. District leaders believe current COVID-19 case numbers support holding in-person graduation ceremonies, with certain restrictions and safety measures in place, the release states.
