“These places were so dangerous to begin with,” said Rayla Bellis, a program manager with Smart Growth America, a Washington-based nonprofit whose report was sponsored by backers including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The shift, she said, only made them “slightly less dangerous.”
On an index where the average community score was 63.3, Jacksonville scored 204.7.
The index uses a yearly rate of pedestrian deaths for every 100,000 people in the Jacksonville area, based on fatalities over 10 years, 2010 to 2019. That rate rose from the 2019 report, which was based on an earlier 10-year bundle of data, because the number of deaths increased faster than the population.
In Tallahassee there are several sidewalk construction projects conducted at present, one example is the sidewalk parallel to Thomasville Road along the west side from Metropolitan Boulevard through the I-10 overpass.
This particular project has multiple short closures between stretches of open sidewalk. The problems arise when it is necessary to step from the sidewalk onto the road which has people mixing in with fast moving traffic three abreast. It’s easy to see how a slight misstep could have a person tangled-up in the tandem wheels of a heavy duty truck.
When sidewalks on one side of a road are closed move to the other side even if it means going out of your way to do so. If that option is not available, before you step onto the road, turn toward the oncoming traffic to make sure no vehicle is headed directly at you.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) â One person was minorly injured in a crash that caused major delays on I-10 westbound Wednesday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said that a Toyota Camry driven by a 26-year-old Tallahassee woman was traveling westbound on I-10 just a mile away from the Thomasville Road exit while a UPS semi-truck pulling trailer was also traveling nearby.
According to witnesses on scene, the driver of the Camry swerved in an attempt to avoid crashing into another vehicle, which caused the car to begin spinning clockwise.
