The Grapevine Backpackers manager Harleigh Lawrinson-Thettoe says Immigration NZ has been giving conflicting advice to workers that has prevented many from being able to work.
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has apologised after admitting some backpackers on working holiday visa extensions were given incorrect advice by contact centre staff that led to them not working for three months. INZ’s botch-up has caused industries that rely on seasonal workers to miss out on critical labour at a time when there are serious shortfalls. Harleigh Lawrinson-Thettoe, of The Grapevine Backpackers in Blenheim, helps place backpackers in seasonal work around Marlborough and said INZ had been giving conflicting advice to workers that had prevented many from being able to work.

The Bay of Plenty Young Growers dinner has been postponed until post-harvest due to the uncertainty of Covid-19 alert levels.
The dinner was planned to be held on Thursday following a day full of competitions that would wind up with the announcement of the young grower who would take the crown.
NZ Kiwifruit Growers Incorporated communications manager Dr Mike Murphy said the decision was made as a necessity to comply with level 2 social distancing and hygiene protocols.
Farmers have nothing to fear over RMA reforms - Agriculture Minister Newshub 14/02/2021 © Newshub Agriculture Minister Damien O Connor.
The Agriculture Minister says farmers have no need to be worried, with changes to the Resource Management Act on the way.
Last week the Government announced the Act would be torn in three and replaced by the Natural and Built Environments Act, the Strategic Planning Act and the Climate Change Adaptation Act.
Karen Williams, Federated Farmers spokesperson for the Resource Management Act, says while the current legislation is overdue, she is worried by the speed and scale of the proposed changes. Our concern is what is the consultation and exercises going on engaging with communities, including rural communities? And about what [the Natural and Built Environments Act] might look like, particularly the impact on our lives that this will have, Williams told Magic Talk s Rural Exchange over the weekend.
