Lubbock will soon have a VA clinic to be proud of.
The new Lubbock VA Outpatient Clinic on 4th Street and Indiana Avenue, across the street from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, will open on Tuesday, June 1.
The $12.3 million, multi-story facility will offer 94,000 square feet of clinical space and new services. Of the many new services are surgical care, an eye clinic, radiology services, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and more.
According to the Amarillo Veterans Administration Health Care System, the new building will allow for expanded primary care, mental health, telehealth, dental and pharmacy services.
Dr. Rodney Gonzalez, director of the Amarillo VA Health Care System, which the Lubbock VA falls under, says the new clinic is more than three times larger than the current facility. He said this is a modern clinic, adding that it s a facility that the region will be proud of.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Executive Order 36 which prohibits public schools from requiring masks on May 18. The executive order will go into effect on June 4 and will supersede all facial covering mandates from local government, public school and public health entities.
The executive order states that public schools can still require facial coverings until June 4. State supported living centers, government owned hospital, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and any county or municipal courts are exempted from the executive order.
Texas Tech or the Tech Health Sciences Center has not commented on their decision to update COVID-19 protocols on their respective campuses.
The Board of Regents for the Texas Tech System, for its last meeting of the last meeting of the academic year, convened at 9 a.m on Thursday, May 13, in the Tech System Building.
Chairman of the board Michael Lewis called the meeting to order and introduced the newly appointed regents Arcillia Acosta, Cody Campbell and Pat Gordon who were appointed by the governor of Texas on April 13. They were not able to vote or comment on anything the board discussed due to their pending appointments by the Texas State Senate.
Chairman Lewis asked the chancellor and the four presidents of the system to present their introductions and recognitions.
