Local Unions, Elected Officials Recognize Essential Workers Who Died In Pandemic

Credit Justin Hicks / IPB News Labor unions and local officials across Indiana recognized an annual Workers Memorial Day on Wednesday. One event in South Bend unveiled a memorial to essential workers who died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Services honored those who died on the job and celebrated labor unions who have historically pushed for safety regulations. This memorial day also marked the 50th anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA is currently drawing criticism for being more than a month past President Biden’s deadline to produce an emergency safety standard related to COVID-19.  Dennis McCafferty, president of the Northern Indiana Area Labor Federation, said he’s confident that under the new administration it will happen.

The Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ) and Rail and Maritime Transport Union (RMTU) represent thousands of port workers throughout New Zealand. Leaders of the two unions say port workers are being killed and hurt due to systemic problems in the industry, and things have to change. MUNZ National Secretary Craig Harrison says the string of deaths and serious accidents at Ports of Auckland over the last few years was a glaring example of the problem, which had recently been exposed by an independent report.

Letters to the editor Readers sound off on Earthworks, violence , more

Newark Advocate Earthworks column missed the mark Dr. Tim Jordan’s guest column in the Advocate’s April 25 edition twice refers to those that developed the city and built Newark’s infrastructure as “racist and ignorant.” This seems to me to be both ignorant and racist. The early settlers to this area found the earthworks abandoned. The local Native Americans were not able to offer any information as to their origin or purpose. The settlers removed the structures that were in the way and preserved the Octagon and Great Circle for future generations. We now know that the earthworks are aligned with the rising and setting of the moon and that there are amazing mathematical relationships among the areas of the various structures but beyond that we are nearly as “ignorant” as our ancestors.
