Other Voices: Abandoned mines program should be reauthorized Frank Howard © Provided by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
In June 2020, an abandoned, underground coal mine collapsed beneath a portion of Belle Vernon. The collapse induced severe subsidence, rupturing underground utilities and impacting 14 homes. Residents were evacuated, and some could not return because the damage impacted their homes’ structural integrity.
Within hours, officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection were onsite assessing damage and mobilizing contractors to start repairs and to correct the abandoned mine problem so that further collapse would not occur. The funds necessary for this emergency mine reclamation project and other emergency and non-emergency projects are made available through the Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) program, a federal program funded exclusively from a small fee on the mining of coal.
