Beedi workers affiliated to different unions in Dakshina Kannada will carry out a protest march on February 25 in Mangaluru against the proposed amendments to the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
Talking to reporters, Vasanth Achari from the South Kanara Beedi Workers Federation (CITU), said the proposed amendments to COTPA will make it more stringent and drastically cut down beedi business, which, in turn , will affect livelihood of lakhs of people.
Among the amendments proposed include barring smoking in public and increase age of cigarette smoker from 18 to 21.

Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (
BMTC) said only 50 per cent of the salary had been credited for December and January.
Besides demanding on-time and full payment of salary, the protestors also urged the management to review the recently-introduced duty hours. Meanwhile, Transport Minister
Laxman Savadi assured a separate meeting of transport workers to address their concerns.
It’s learnt that the BMTC was unable to credit full salary to the employees due to a delay in the release of grant promised by the state government. ‘We will reduce work hours for female conductors’
Road Transport Corporation employees staged a protest on Wednesday with a list of demands including timely payment of salaries, reduction in work hours and restarting operations for the entire fleet of BMTC buses. They also want BMTC to drop its plan to lease electric buses from private operators.
Due to poor fare revenue after COVID-19, Road Transport Corporations (RTCs) have been relying on the State government for the salaries of over 1.3 lakh employees, who are yet to get full salaries for the months of December and January.
