Naval Air Station Jacksonville gets a new commander

By MATT SOERGEL | The Florida Times-Union | Published: April 9, 2021 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Tribune News Service) Capt. Jeffrey Hill took over command Friday of Naval Air Station Jacksonville, the third-largest Navy base in the country. The change of command ceremony, closed to the media, featured praise for outgoing Capt. Brian Weiss, commander since October 2019. Weiss guided the base through the COVID-19 pandemic and was commander in 2020 when it was named the Navy’s top naval air station for the third-straight year. Before that, Weiss was executive officer at the base and helped lead rescue efforts after a chartered plane with 146 aboard skidded off the base s runway into the St. Johns River. All crew and passengers survived.

Talking to other Army veterans like her, she heard the same thing. “Many of us had the same kind of challenges,” said Jackson, who wanted a place that understood goals and questions common to vets and their families in business. So, she helped start one. The Jacksonville Veterans Chamber of Commerce is still settling on a permanent home but has begun reaching out to people with military roots as an affiliate of a national organization with chambers in 20 states.
