Galway Bay FM 29 April 2021 print Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway TD has called for support for the USI Student Accommodation Bill in Dáil Éireann. Sinn Fein Deputy Mairead Farrell has said students are not a cash cow and protections must be put in place to safeguard their finances. The bill which was tabled by the Union of Students in Ireland and Sinn Fein looks at the challenges faced by students in purpose-built student accommodation, such as notice periods when exiting rental agreements and reclaiming deposits. It comes as there were widespread reports of students having difficulties in reclaiming their deposits, last September, when third level institutions announced that teaching would continue largely online due to the ongoing pandemic.

Covid-19: QUB and Ulster University to hold virtual graduations By Robbie Meredith Published Queen s University and Ulster University will not hold any in-person graduation ceremonies this summer. Instead, graduation events will be held online by both universities. It is the second summer in a row that students will not be able to graduate in ceremonies on campus, with the vast majority of end of year exams also to be held online. Queen s University will, however, hold a small number of in-person exams on campus. The majority of students at Queen s and Ulster universities have spent the 2020/21 academic year taking their degree courses online.

Limerick development advocate to discuss Leaving Cert reform Reporter:   ); SUSTAINABLE development advocate Caillum Hedderman will join a panel tonight to discuss the future of the Leaving Certificate. Labour councillor Conor Sheehan is hosting a discussion on the future of the examination, especially in the wake of the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on it. Also taking part will be his party colleague, Senator Annie Hoey, a former president of the Union of Students in Ireland. It all gets under way at 7pm, and can be accessed through Cllr Sheehan’s Facebook page. Speaking ahead of the meeting, the City North councillor told of how he was impressed at the campaigning by 18-year-old Caillum, a sixth-year student at John the Baptist Community School in Hospital.
