The Rise of Aten : Egypt Unearths 3,000-Year-Old Lost Golden City in Luxor

At the time, it was described as the biggest archaeological discovery in history, but was referred to by Howard Carter’s excavation team as the unleashing of the “Pharaoh’s curse.” Once again, Luxor is the center of archaeological discovery after Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced on Thursday the discovery of what it has been dubbed the “Lost Golden City.”  After seven months of excavation, a mission led by Dr. Zahi Hawass, Egypt’s former antiquities chief, unearthed “several areas or neighborhoods” excavators believe to be a part of a 3,000-year-old city.

2021-04-08 11:54:32 GMT مصر/Golden City/Tourism and Archeology CAIRO, April 8 (MENA) - The Egyptian mission led by Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, in cooperation with the Tourism and Antiquities Ministry, announced on Thursday the discovery of the golden city that was submerged and buried under layers of sand in Luxor. The city, known as Ascension of Aton , dates back to the reign of King Amenhotep III and continued to be used by King Tutankhamun in the area between the Temple of Ramses III in Medinet Habu and the Temple of Amenhotep III in Memnon. In a statement, Hawass said digging operations started in this area to look for the funerary temple of King Tutankhamun after unearthing temples of Horemheb and Ay.

The ceremony, designed to showcase the country’s rich heritage, snaked along the Nile corniche from the Egyptian Museum overlooking Tahrir Square to the newly opened National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in the Fustat neighborhood, where Egypt’s first Islamic capital was located. (Not to be confused with the Grand Egyptian Museum slated to open later in 2021, near the Giza pyramids.)
