Wasps Kiwi star Jimmy Gopperth (L) tackles Bristol s Tiff Eden in a game where he was praised for admitting to the referee that Bristol had scored a try.
Wasps’ Kiwi star Jimmy Gopperth has been praised by a referee and hailed for “world-class sportsmanship’’ after telling the match official to award Bristol a try against his team. It’s rare to see such candour in professional sport, but Gopperth earned a lot of admirers for his honesty in Wasps’ 37-20 loss to Bristol on Friday (Saturday NZ time). Referee Karl Dickson was about to go upstairs to his Television Match Official (TMO) after Bristol Bears lock Joe Joyce lunged for the line, beneath a haystack of bodies, in the 55th minute at Bristol s Ashton Gate ground.
Smith, the Highlanders co-captain, was leading his side with hooker Ash Dixon on the bench and asked referee Paul Williams to check for potential foul play in the build-up to Etene Nanai-Seturo’s disallowed 78th minute try for the Chiefs in Hamilton. The challenge was incidental for the result because the Highlanders led by 16 points with two minutes left, but had Nanai-Seturo’s score stood, they would have lost their bonus point for scoring three more tries than the Chiefs (5-2).
