As dusk fell on Friday (29), Army medical teams at both Colombo Army Hospital at Narahenpita and Panagoda Army Hospital completed the inoculation of 1000 doses of ‘AstraZeneca Covishield’ vaccine to Army personnel serving at the front line in the fight against transmission of COVID-19 after its inauguration took place at Narahenpita, graced by General Shavendra Silva, Head, National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army.

The College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka (CCPSL) has released a position paper regarding the mandatory cremation of the bodies infected with COVID-19.
In the paper, the CCPSL points out that while the impact of the coronavirus was devastating, it also brought a set of social and cultural issues that are unheard of.
They note that at the early stage of the pandemic, many decisions were taken based on precautionary principles, which the CCPSL agreed at that time.
The CCPSL remarks that the scientific brief regarding COVID-19 was last updated in October 2020 by the National Centre for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. Centre for Disease Control confirms that the virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets.

A total of 579 persons tested positive for the COVID-19 virus yesterday, with 507 of them being contacts of the Peliyagoda Fish Market cluster and 72 from the Prisons cluster.
With medical professionals raising concern of a possible surge in virus infections during the last week of December and in January 2021, the public has been urged not to embark on religious pilgrimages to Adams Peak by the Nuwara Eliya District Committee for controlling COVID-19. A similar request was made by the Trincomalee District COVID Committee, following the detection of 70 infected patients this week. According to the Department of Government Information, yesterday’s count of 579 pushes the total number of confirmed COVID-19 patients from the Prisons, Minuwangoda and Peliyagoda Clusters past 38,600.

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Police have requested the general public to adhere to the health regulations issued by the Direct-General of Health services to curb the spread of COVID-19.
“The spread of the virus can be tackled by limiting mobility,” Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said.
The Police Media Spokesperson requested the general public to obey quarantine regulations during this week and the next.
The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has risen to 35,387 after 650 more cases were identified on Thursday (17th Dec).

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The total number of patients to have recovered from COVID-19 has increased to over 25,000.
This is after another 785 patients recovered.
The total number of recoveries has increased to 25,652, according to the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health.
Meanwhile, 8312 patients remain infected with COVID-19 and continue to receive treatment at hospitals.
3 people were confirmed to have died from the virus, raising Sri Lanka’s death toll to 157.
The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in Sri Lanka now stands at 34,121.
