Perhaps no city is more suited to day tripping than Los Angeles, a town that lives and dies by its obsessive car culture. So it seems only natural that during lockdown, when something as simple as a trip to the bottle shop is an event worth dressing up for, Angelenos are taking to their cars to satisfy a need for diversion.
In a time when drive-through holiday parades and car concerts are
de rigueur, destination dining in Southern California has begun to mirror its European counterparts, with locals driving a bit of distance to experience a Michelin-starred meal the way travelers do on their holidays across the pond.
This year, our annual compendium of dining debuts looks very different. There’s no talk of buzzy scenes, dazzling design, and intricate plating. Instead, it’s takeout, shifting business models, and struggles to survive. We’ve lost loved ones and beloved businesses, but amidst the devastation and heartbreak of the past year, one thing that’s remained constant is the power of restaurants to comfort, to bring us together, even when we’re only able to order delivery and gather with the members of our immediate household.
