KWWSPCA: Watch out for ewes stuck on their backs
Reporter:

This a timely warning issued by Roundwood Veterinary Practice: It is coming up to lambing season which means soon enough the fields will be full of bouncy lambs.
As the ewes approach the end of their pregnancy, they run the risk of getting cast, as seen below. (‘Cast’ is an old term for an animal turned over on its back, unable to right itself.) Their fleeces are heavy now, and with the added weight of almost fully grown lambs, the ewes may accidentally roll backwards down into a ditch or shallow rut. If this happens, gas can build up in the stomach without being able to escape and this can rapidly be fatal!
Here’s our ten commandments for responsible pet ownership. Are your providing your pet with the following? The New Year is a good time to reassess whether.

The KWWSPCA would like to wish everyone a happy, safe and healthy New Year. Due to the most recent Government restrictions, Noah’s Ark, the KWWSPCA’s Charity Shop in Newbridge, will have to stay closed now until the end of January at the earliest. But we hope to continue with our online sales, which proved so successful in 2020, and details of these will be posted on the KWWSPCA Facebook pages. The KWWSPCA Animal Shelter near Athgarvan will stay closed to visitors unless an appointment is made to visit a specific dog.
