(CNA photo) TAIPEI (Taiwan News) The Cabinet announced Monday (April 19) the deputy head of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) will succeed the outgoing minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍), 16 days after a deadly derailment in east Taiwan left 49 dead. Wang Kwo-tsai (王國財), the deputy MOTC minister, will officially take over on Tuesday (April 20) when Lin s resignation takes effect. During his term as a deputy MOTC minister since 2016, Wang acted as an interim minister for two months following the resignation of then-minister Wu Hong-mo (吳宏謀). This was in the wake of another deadly train accident in October 2018, after which Lin took up his post in January 2019.

Just 11 people have died from COVID-19 in Taiwan since the pandemic began, an impressive feat for a country that never went into lockdown. At the start of the pandemic, Taiwan was considered a high-risk country for COVID-19 due to its proximity to China and the frequent travel that takes place between the two countries. A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association has examined further just why Taiwan did so well at conquering COVID-19. The study’s authors, from a range of health institutes and hospitals in Taiwan and the US, compared the estimated effectiveness of two types of COVID-19 policy in the early months of the pandemic: case-based and population-based measures.
