A few weeks ago, French farmers hung suicide dolls on trees outside parliament to draw attention to the devastation brought about by continuously sliding market prices. In a country which follows modern agricultural practices, it is disturbing to know that while three farmers on an average commit suicide every two days, growing indebtedness is resulting in the closure of at least 1,500 farms every year.

Harvesting of Seedless Cucumber, Tomato begins at Krishi Bhawan Jammu
JAMMU: Director Agriculture Production & Farmer Welfare Jammu, K. K. Sharma today inspected the first picking of Seedless Cucumber (Jointer) and Tomato (NS 4266) being grown under protected cultivation at Krishi Bhawan Talab Tillo Jammu.
These crops are raised here under Naturally Ventilated Polygreen House (NVPGH) structure using advanced vegetable cultivation practices for demonstration and popularization among the farmers.
Joint Director Agriculture (Extension) Shahid Iqbal Sheikh, Plant Protection Officer Devinder Sharma, Agronomist Vegetable Improvement Scheme J. C Raina, Floriculture Development Assistant, Rohit Singh Ballowria and Research Assistant, Manmohan Singh besides other concerned were present on the occasion.

To amplify the voice of farmers against the three agro-market laws, a group of former bureaucrats, including two Padam Shri awardees, and former Army persons, have come together to form Kirti Kisan Forum in the city.
So far, the group has written a letter in connection with farmers protest to the President of India and organised a seminar on the three farm laws at Punjab Kala Bhawan auditorium this month in the city, apart from donating beds and books at the Sighu border in January.
“We even met farmer leaders and members of Samyukt Kisan Morcha on January 31. They didn’t ask us for anything, except to spread awareness about the three laws and the adverse affect they will have on country’s farmers,” says Padam Shri SS Boparai, former Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala.
