Georgia K-9 officer shot in line of duty released from vet

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. - A Georgia K-9 officer who was shot while tracking a suspect in Douglasville over the weekend is at home recovering after being released from a veterinarian hospital Tuesday.
Investigators say the shooting happened after Douglasville Police Department officers noticed a vehicle trying to avoid a driver’s license and safety checkpoint on Chapel Hill Road near the Interstate 20 exit. Officers began to pursue the vehicle, but it stopped and the male driver behind a nearby Lowe s, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

DOUGLASVILLE â On Sunday, April 18, the GBI was requested by the Douglasville Police Department (DPD) to investigate an officer-involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 2:07 a.m., DPD officers were conducting a driverâs license and safety checkpoint on Chapel Hill Road near the I-20 exit. While at the checkpoint, officers saw a vehicle attempting to avoid law enforcement. Officers began to pursue the vehicle, but it stopped and the male driver ran. Officers set up a perimeter and requested assistance from the Austell Police Departmentâs K-9 Unit. During the search, the man was found and gunfire was exchanged with an Austell PD officer. During the shooting, Austell PD K-9 âJerry Leeâ was struck once in his front left leg.
