North Carolina added its highest-ever 10,398 new COVID-19 cases to its dashboard Jan. 7, an increase of more than 3,400 over Jan. 6 s total of 6,592, and 871 higher than the previous record of 9,527 set Jan. 1. The addition increased the total in the state to 592,746 since the start of the pandemic.  As of Jan. 5, COVID-19 deaths in the state totaled 7,213. In Buncombe County, another 163 cases Jan. 5 increased the new total to 10,265 and a total of 173 deaths. Hospitalizations Statewide, North Carolina reported 3,960 COVID-19 hospitalizations as of Jan. 6, an increase of 67 over Jan. 4 and a new record. The state reported 469 confirmed positive patients admitted in the previous 24 hours.
